Basic Supplements for Everyone

[spoiler alert: I’m giving you a BIG discount below!]

In order to be healthy and function optimally, the cells, tissue, and organs of the body must get the nutrients they need. First and foremost, this comes from eating nutritious food. However, because of

  • unique individual needs we each have, or
  • toxins in the body, or
  • damage to our body through the years, or
  • poor farming methods that do not keep vital nutrients in the soil and our food,

it is appropriate for everyone to take additional supplements to ‘supplement’ those nutrients.

Every body should be consuming a potent multivitamin.

Because calcium and magnesium take up so much room in a capsule or tablet, it is virtually impossible to take enough to supplement these important minerals. In typical supplements, calcium and magnesium are at low levels unless you take 4 to 6 per day of a multivitamin.

I recommend a multivitamin that has 500 mg of calcium and 500 mg of magnesium, in three tablets taken twice each day. My recommended multivitamin is also strong in B vitamins and vitamin C.

Essential fatty acids are not made in the body, so they must be ingested like vitamins. In fact, they are called ‘essential’ because the body cannot make them, just like vitamins are ‘vital’ to the body because the body does not make them either. I prefer flax seed oil to supply omega 3 oils because it contains the parent compound alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is needed in cell membranes in order for cells to function properly. ALA is broken down in the body into the downstream products EPA and DHA, which are found in fish oils. Unfortunately, fish oils do not contain ALA.

‘Vitamin’ D is technically not a vitamin because the body makes it. However, it does not make enough to give us the optimal protection with the immune system and other organ support we need. I recommend that everyone take up to 5000 IU daily, in addition to the small amount in the multivitamin. A blood level is easy to obtain and can tell you for sure if your body has enough or if it needs more.

 A supplement is a supplement is a supplement, some might say.  However, I can assure you that that is not true!  There are so many grades and qualities of supplements on the market today.  These extend from pharmaceutical grade down to capsules that pass through the body intact (you can read the brand name on the capsule at the bottom of the port-a-potty).  Lower quality supplements may be full of toxic metals (including mercury, lead, arsenic, aluminum) and they may not contain what the label says they have.

For years I have used pharmaceutical grade supplements in my line, but I have been on the lookout or something that in my heart I believed to be possible–a plant-based supplement that energetically feeds our body food.  I am delighted to report that I have finally found it: Eureka!

Our Body’s Ability to Heal Itself

A reader writes: Once you have diabetes or arthritis or anything like that can your body heal itself with proper eating or something else?

All diseases or ‘labels’ have a cause. As long as the cause is not addressed and changed, there will be no treatment or cure for diabetes or arthritis. The usual cause in Type II diabetes is taking in too many carbohydrates (especially sugar) into your body for too many years. The solution in reducing carbs significantly and making sure the nutrient deficiencies caused by the bad years are corrected–especially including magnesium, chromium, vanadium, biotin. Exercise also helps. Best Places to Get Herbs, Supplements

Good morning team,
I would like to obtain herbs that are suggested by Dr. Gardner. My question is where is there a reliable source/sources for a good quality product?
Thank you for your help.

As you can probably imagine, there are many levels of quality for all supplements, including herbs.  The quality and content can be confusing for the following reasons:

  • The amount listed may not be present.
  • There can be toxins that are not removed, such as arsenic, mercury, lead. Although the testing is expensive, tablets and capsules can be sent to labs that test for these toxins so you know for sure.
  • They may not be in a form that the body readily digests them so they can be absorbed.  You know that you have a non-bio-available supplement if you can read the capsule label in the bottom of the port-a-potty.  Those who clean port-a-pottys comment on the expensive “nutrition” that wasn’t absorbed in the body.

Generally speaking, health food stores carry a higher quality brand than regular stores and pharmacies.  Network marketing companies tend to have higher quality and better quality control.

I mainly order my supplements and herbs from labs that make their products available to practitioners only.  They have superb quality control and don’t put their products on the internet or sell to the lay person.  The supplements that I use, the Primivia line, are my personal formulations that I have designed and the laboratories create to my specifications.  I arranged to have the Vital Primivia capsules placed in a daily packet so that you only need to open the packet and take the contents, instead of opening 6 or more bottles each time you take supplements.  This also makes it easier to transport a week’s worth or whatever length of time you will be gone, in a purse, bag, or suitcase, rather than several bottles or a large pill container.

Strong Bones

Dr. Gardner, you mentioned strontium and silicon to be taken in addition to a daily supplement to build strong bones. I currently take one packet of Vital Primevia a day (two was giving me nosebleeds). How many milligrams of each should be taken per day? Would any supplement for these work that you find in a health food store? How much calcium per day would be needed for a 52 year old women taking the silicon and strontium? Is chewable calcium beneficial?

Vital Primivia at one packet per day contains 250 mg of calcium and magnesium.  This is not sufficient for bone health.  You need to add 250 to 500 mg of both calcium and magnesium to get an adequate amount.  Chewable calcium is fine. 

The rest of the minerals you need for bone health are in the multivitamin, even at 1/2 dose. 

Strontium is an interesting mineral.  For bone health, you need 2 to 3 mg per day.  However, if you have osteoporosis and you take 1,000 mg per day, it will stimulate bone repair and improve DEXA scan readings.  Eating whole grains will supply adequate silicon, although it can also be found in supplement form.

Fish Oil vs. Krill Oil

Will you share the difference between fish oil capsules and krill oil capsules. I have a real problem swallowing pills and the krill oil capsules are so much easier for me. But I am not sure if I give up benefits.Will you share the difference between fish oil capsules and krill oil capsules. Krill oil and fish oil both contain omega-3 fatty acids, but not the parent compound that is important for the cell membrane of each cell.  They are both excellent, and do all the things advertised.  You do not lose any benefits by using Krill oil.

However, I prefer Flax oil, just because it has the parent compound omega-3 and some omega-6 also

Blood Pressure, Vitamins

Two Questions: My husband is taking Amlodipine Besylate 5 mg per day for blood pressure.  After taking it he feels hot.  What do you recommend taking? He also was diagnosed 8 years ago with autoimmune hepititus which they think is due to taking the antibiotic Avolox.

Also, do you know about Young Living Products?  We have been taking the vitamins, but they are so expensive.  I came across your supplements but I need some advice on what we need.  My Dr. says I need to increase my Vitamin D and say Sams club has their brand that is 3000 I.U.  My LDL Cholesterol is 142, total Cholesterol is 236 and Triglycerides are 185.  She says I am beginning to have Osteopenea.

Amlodipine  besylate is an anti-hypertensive that blocks the intake of calcium into the muscle of the arteries. The influx of calcium is what causes muscle to contract. This means it relieves whatever constriction the blood vessel muscle was having on the artery. This will dilate the blood vessel, permitting more blood to flow, which may cause a feeling of heat, and may also drop the blood pressure. I think conventional medicine is too aggressive with medication use with blood pressures. Although he would need supervision of a practitioner such as myself to monitor him, usually I shift patients from medications to high doses of magnesium (which also functions as a calcium channel blocker like amlodipine), CoQ10 and hawthorne.

As far as basic vitamins for general use, I recommend everyone be on a potent multivitamin, essential oils and vitamin D.  My website has a product called Vital Primivia which combines the potent multivitamin with appropriate dosages of essential oils in a convenient packet taken twice each day. Add 5,000 IU of vitamin D to it, unless your levels or vitamin D are already above 40.  For osteoporosis, you may want to add strontium and silicon also.

Mercury in Fish Oils

Do pill issuers take mercury out of fish oil before they encapsulate it?

All the high quality supplement manufacturers have quality control tests that check to make sure that all mercury and other contaminants or toxic metals have been removed. Not only is the mercury in the fish a problem, but the processing of supplements can introduce toxic substances into the product that weren’t there before. That is one of the problems with low-end supplement purchases that are less expensive.

You will want to make sure that the supplements you take are top quality, with the highest of processing standards.

When to Take Supplements

Question: We all know as we age supplements are very important. I take my 15 plus pills in the morning, and every time I wonder if taking them all at once is good, is this the best time of day to take them? Is there any advice on the most optimal time to take our supplements?

The best time to take most supplements is during a meal.  The body is preparing to digest and absorb nutrients that come with the meal. If the B vitamins are taken on an empty stomach, they tend to irritate the stomach lining, so they must be taken with meals. Ideally, take a bite or two, then take a supplement, and spread the supplements throughout the meal. Water soluble vitamins are excreted out the urine, so they should be taken two times per day to keep the levels high.

It is the riboflavin (B2) that causes the fluorescent yellow color in the urine. Overloading the cells with vitamins will not harm them, and if the need is great, then the cells can absorb more as needed. Each of us has different needs for the various vitamins, and since we don’t have good lab tests to assess those needs, my feeling is to use potent vitamins to permit the cells to extract all they can and need.  Your body knows how to best utilize what it is given.
