How Your Body Talks When You Have Hay Fever or Allergies

allergy-1738191__340Spring is in the air, with lovely flowers and trees blossoming around us. For some of us, the spring fragrances are invigorating and refreshing. But for others, springtime triggers an unwanted cascade of stuffy noses, scratchy throats, infected sinuses and miserable headaches. And then there are some of us who experience these unpleasant symptoms year round, as we are exposed to pet dander, dust, mold, or other allergens.

Why do some people get hay fever and others do not? It’s frustrating to be suffering from allergies when others around you are energized and feel fine, even though the exposure to pollens, animal dander, dust and mold is the same in all people.

What is the trigger that tells the body to mount an allergic response in some people but not others? Although we may not know exactly why that happens, fortunately we now can understand much about the immune system and how it talks in the body. With that information, maybe we can ameliorate some of the unpleasant symptoms that make springtime (and other times) miserable for some of us.

Normal Immune Response

 When a microscopic foreign body enters your body, your white cells identify it as foreign (or the enemy). Foreign bodies may be infectious agents, or food that has not adequately broken down, or chemicals, mold spores or even pollens, animal dander or dust. Your white cells send out signals immediately to get the enemy under control.

 One message goes to the macrophages. Macrophages are like little garbage trucks, but instead of coming once or twice a week they are constantly available on demand. As soon as they get the SOS signal from the white cells, they come quickly and digest the foreign body, thereby rendering it harmless.

 The white cells send another signal to the basophils. These little guys release substances that cause inflammation, including pain or itching, and swelling. We might refer to the basophils as an early warning system: something is not right, or “you just ate (inhaled, swallowed, touched) something that is not good for you.”

If your body recognizes the allergen as a trigger it has experienced before, it will notify the bigger immune system, which we might compare to a spy detection system. Your larger immune system is activated to attract previously formed antibodies (it remembers the previous exposure) and other cells to get rid of the offending ‘foreign body.’ If your body has not seen this particular foreign body before, it may form new antibodies to help fight and get rid of the offending (enemy) agent. (Yay for 007!)

 Allergic Immune Response

 If you have allergies like hay fever or allergic asthma, your body has formed immunoglobulin (which are also called antibodies). The allergy antibody we are most familiar with is called immunoglobulin E (IgE). Each IgE is specific to one trigger, like dog dander or certain tree pollens. You probably have many IgE immunoglobulin, each reacting to a different substance.

Immunoglobulin remembers your previous exposure to the pollen, or animal dander, or even dust and mold in the house. When the IgE receptor is stimulated with the foreign exposure, the mast cells release chemicals that cause an immediate inflammatory reaction, and start to make more of these inflammatory chemicals. The chemical most commonly associated with allergies is histamine, which is the major culprit in hay fever.

 Itchy is a good word to describe the effects of histamine. Histamine causes the eyes to have tears and swell and become itchy. The nose becomes congested, itchy and has a clear liquid discharge. The throat becomes itchy. The bronchioles (small connecting pipes to the lung where air exchange takes place) become smaller and produce mucus. We call this asthma or wheezing.

 Treatment for Allergies

 So what do we do to become allergy free? Or is there such a thing? We have found some things that can help tremendously:

  1. Be healthy
  • good diet
  • basic supplements
  • exercise
  1. Instead of taking anti-histaminics (with their lengthy list of side effects), try
  • Quercetin and
  • Stinging nettle,

both of which reduce the amount of histamine released from the mast cell.

  1. Avoid offending substances, if you can.
  2. Allergy desensitization, through any number of ways:
  • NAET (Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique). This technique that I have used successfully for years in my practice involves exposure of offending substances in homeopathic vials while stimulating the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, along with tapping of certain acupuncture points
  • LDA (Low Dose Allergen)–low dose exposure of the offending allergens by injection or under the tongue
  • Homeopathic drops that address predetermined allergens by season; otherwise placed under the tongue

Basic Supplements for Everyone

In order to be healthy and function optimally, the cells, tissue, and organs of the body must get the nutrients they need. First and foremost, this comes from eating nutritious food. However, because of

  • unique individual needs we each have, or
  • toxins in the body, or
  • damage to our body through the years, or
  • poor farming methods that do not keep vital nutrients in the soil and our food,

Because calcium and magnesium take up so much room in a capsule or tablet, it is virtually impossible to take enough to supplement these important minerals. In typical supplements, calcium and magnesium are at low levels unless you take 4 to 6 per day of a multivitamin.

I recommend a multivitamin that has 500 mg of calcium and 500 mg of magnesium, in three tablets taken twice each day. My recommended multivitamin is also strong in B vitamins and vitamin C.

Essential fatty acids are not made in the body, so they must be ingested like vitamins. In fact, they are called ‘essential’ because the body cannot make them, just like vitamins are ‘vital’ to the body because the body does not make them either. I prefer flax seed oil to supply omega 3 oils because it contains the parent compound alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is needed in cell membranes in order for cells to function properly. ALA is broken down in the body into the downstream products EPA and DHA, which are found in fish oils. Unfortunately, fish oils do not contain ALA.

‘Vitamin’ D is technically not a vitamin because the body makes it. However, it does not make enough to give us the optimal protection with the immune system and other organ support we need. I recommend that everyone take up to 5000 IU daily, in addition to the small amount in the multivitamin. A blood level is easy to obtain and can tell you for sure if your body has enough or if it needs more.

Antioxidants and Oxidative Stress

In the normal course of metabolism, your body produces small, high-energy particles that have a single electron in their outer shell (such molecules are unstable because electrons prefer to be paired).  These are called free radicals, and they can be very damaging in their search for another electron.  If too many of them are produced, their extremely high energy can also be damaging to normal tissues.  Free radicals disrupt the normal production of DNA, the genetic material, and alter the lipids (fats) in cell membranes.  We are also exposed to free radicals that are found in the environment or generated by exposure to environmental chemicals.  One way to protect yourself from free-radical damage is to take dietary supplements.  Specifically, vitamins A, C, E, and beta-carotene; the trace minerals selenium and zinc; and accessory food factors, such as bioflavonoids and coenzyme Q10.

Our Body’s Ability to Heal Itself

A reader writes: Once you have diabetes or arthritis or anything like that can your body heal itself with proper eating or something else?

All diseases or ‘labels’ have a cause. As long as the cause is not addressed and changed, there will be no treatment or cure for diabetes or arthritis. The usual cause in Type II diabetes is taking in too many carbohydrates (especially sugar) into your body for too many years. The solution in reducing carbs significantly and making sure the nutrient deficiencies caused by the bad years are corrected–especially including magnesium, chromium, vanadium, biotin. Exercise also helps. Weight Loss

I have had a stomach staple lost 125lbs first year kept that off but have gone up and down since. This past year I lost 70lbs and do not want it back. I should lose another 40 or 50lbs where how what can I do?

Congratulations on losing weight, even though it took a surgical procedure to do it. I am sure you have tried a vast number of things to try to help you, but here is a list you may be able to choose from:

1. Low carb diets. Carbohydrates  become sugar in the body, which become fat if the levels are high.  There are many low carb diets, of which Atkins is the most strict and best known.  These diets are not healthy long term, but may be tried over the short term.

2. Long term low intensity exercise, like walking an hour or more, will burn fat while you are walking.  However, if you want to burn fat for hours after exercise, you will need to do 4 to 8 high-intensity interval trainings a day for 3 or 4 days per week.

3.  A HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), or burst, or spurt, is done by exerting maximal effort for 30 to 60 seconds.

4. Be sure you are getting good sleep, eating real food, and taking supplements so your body is not craving food for nutrient deficiencies.

5. The HCG diet has been helpful for many, but you must be willing to follow it strictly.  You will still need to maintain proper eating and exercise habits long term, no matter what you find successful for the short term.

Eyesight Improvement

Please is there Any Supplement for EyeSight improvement?

Most everything that affects the eyes and eye sight has associated oxidative stress (free radical damage).  All of the supplements for eyes are strong antioxidants.

They are especially good for macular degeneration and are probably helpful for cataracts.  Of course, a bleed in the eye or a retinal tear may have oxidative stress, but relieving that with antioxidants will not get the vision back.  The antioxidants that are most helpful for the eye include:

  • lutein,
  • bilberry,
  • zeaxanthin,
  • blueberry extracts,
  • alpha-lipoic acid.

Cancer and Natural Solutions

About a year ago, a naturopathic doctor gave me a test for cancer. She said the test revealed a malignant brain tumor in the making if I did not changes. She suggested omega 3 oil, vitamins, minerals, adrenal support. Seems like this is not enough for something so potentially serious. She practices in another state. Any suggestions? Getting worried.

In answering you, I must make several assumptions, and comment on my assumptions.  The test the naturopathic doctor gave you was most likely assessing energy, such as in electrodermal testing.  Electrodermal testing can often pick up vibrational frequencies of illnesses before they become manifest at the physical level.

I also assume there is no blood marker or obvious tumor mass or biopsy.  All healthy tissue vibrates at a unique frequency for that particular tissue or organ.

All damaged tissue (including cancer in the making) also vibrates at a specific frequency, which can be assessed by the proper equipment and diagnosticians.  If the damaged cells are not repaired by the immune system and surrounding cells, they will progress to the physical manifestation of the disease.

Repair at this time, before the manifestation of physical disease, is much easier, and the suggestions the naturopath has given may be adequate to strengthen the immune system.  If this is the case, your surrounding cells will be able to initiate repair and never manifest  the illness, which is what you want to have happen.

In my office, I use a lab test to assess the number and efficacy of the natural killer cells, which are the white cells that do the final killing of cancer cells.

If the lab result numbers are weak, I become much more aggressive at strengthening the immune system.  If they are strong, it provides assurance that we just need to keep doing what we are presently doing.

Best Places to Get Herbs, Supplements

Good morning team,
I would like to obtain herbs that are suggested by Dr. Gardner. My question is where is there a reliable source/sources for a good quality product?
Thank you for your help.

As you can probably imagine, there are many levels of quality for all supplements, including herbs.  The quality and content can be confusing for the following reasons:

  • The amount listed may not be present.
  • There can be toxins that are not removed, such as arsenic, mercury, lead. Although the testing is expensive, tablets and capsules can be sent to labs that test for these toxins so you know for sure.
  • They may not be in a form that the body readily digests them so they can be absorbed.  You know that you have a non-bio-available supplement if you can read the capsule label in the bottom of the port-a-potty.  Those who clean port-a-pottys comment on the expensive “nutrition” that wasn’t absorbed in the body.

Generally speaking, health food stores carry a higher quality brand than regular stores and pharmacies.  Network marketing companies tend to have higher quality and better quality control.

I mainly order my supplements and herbs from labs that make their products available to practitioners only.  They have superb quality control and don’t put their products on the internet or sell to the lay person.  The supplements that I use, the Primivia line, are my personal formulations that I have designed and the laboratories create to my specifications.  I arranged to have the Vital Primivia capsules placed in a daily packet so that you only need to open the packet and take the contents, instead of opening 6 or more bottles each time you take supplements.  This also makes it easier to transport a week’s worth or whatever length of time you will be gone, in a purse, bag, or suitcase, rather than several bottles or a large pill container.

Early Signs of Alzheimers

My mother is interested in ordering vitamins. She shows some early signs of alzheimer’s. Which of your supplements would be best for her?

1. Everyone should be on a potent multivitamin, about 6 per day.  If less than that, there is not enough calcium and magnesium in them, as they take up a lot of room in the multivitamin.

2.  Essential fatty acids, both omega 3 (I prefer flax seed oil) and omega 6 oils along with

3.  5,000 IU of vitamin D is a good start.

4.  Because Alzheimer’s is a brain breakdown, an additional B complex could be added, and

5.  double the typical dose of essential fatty acids.

6.  Be sure she drinks plenty of water, because dehydration is common in the elderly and looks a lot like Alzheimer’s.

6.  Consider adding high doses of phosphatidylcholine to surround the nerves with the fatty myelin sheath, which improves conduction of nerves.

7.  For dilation of the blood vessels in the brain, the following could be tried—gingko biloba, arginine (5 grams per day).

Usually, by the time symptoms of Alzheimer’s appear, brain damage has already occurred.  These steps will hopefully at least slow down the progression, and hopefully start reversing symptoms and building new brain tissue.
